I guess it all depends on how you define a nerd vis-a-vis a geek. Here's two quotes to explain my position:
First, from devastatingly brilliant and sadly, very dead author Douglas Adams:
(and I paraphrase)
"Some people think that if anyone ever discovers the true nature and purpose of the universe, it will immediately cease to exist and be replaced with something even more bizarrely inexplicable. Other people think this has already happened."
In my mind, the first people are the nerds, the last are the geeks.
Second quote, from Thomas Huxley:
"Try to know something about everything and everything about something"
If you can do the first, that's a nerd, but if you can do the second, that's a geek.
Of course, it should be pointed out that just by discussing the comparative merits of the two, we have created an as yet un-named third category, surpassing the first two, to which we must now belong.
