So far I only have MMOs with a subscriber base of atleast 10,000+.
The Realm Online: 12,000 as of last quarter 05
Ultima Online: 135,000 as of first quarter 06, note:70,000 of those are in Japan.
EverQuest: 200,000 as of first quarter 05 +30,000 playing EQ:Online Adventures.
Asheron's Call: approx 20,000 first quarter 06
Anarchy Online: was around 40,000 players...hard to call as they have "free" accounts now.
WWII Online: 12,000 as of middle 05
Dark Age of Camelot: 125,000 first quarter 06
Tibia: 67,000 paying accounts...most likely more of the "free" ones.
Runescape: 781,000 as of the middle of 06
Final Fantasy XI: approx 500,000, hard to get more accurate.
The Sims Online: was 35,000 beginning of 05 and was falling fast.
Shadowbane: approx 20,000 at the end of 04, but new management has been running the accounts free...so it may be growing. The new mgt can in in 06.
Eve Online: 125,625 as of June 06
PlanetSide: Maybe 20,000 middle of 06
Toontown Online: 110,000, but due to the age group of the game, I wouldn't recommend it.
Second Life: 65,000 middle of 06
Star Wars Galaxies: 170,000 middle of 06
Lineage II: 1.3 million, only 89,000 in the US and Europe
City of Heroes/Villians: 160,000 middle of 06
EverQuest II: 175,000 middle of 06
World of Warcraft: 6.6 Million, approx 1.5 Mil in the US and 1 Mil in Europe
Matrix Online: 30,000 middle of 06
Dungeons and Dragons Online: approx 90,000 middle of 06
Since those numbers, I think the main players have been
Lord of the Ring Online (of course),
Vanguard, and
Guild Wars. The latter 2 most likely breaking 10,000. Big one's coming up,
Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning,
Age of Conan, and
Tabula Rasa. I suspect good things from
Huxley and
Stargate Worlds as well as
Darkfall if they would get their act together. Oh and
The Secret World would be something to watch...could it be the first MMO of the horror genre, or will it fall apart like all the others. Horror genre is definitely the hardest to get right and probably the worst to convert to an MMO for many reasons. But it makes a metric ton of money in the game circuit so I suspect we'll see more attempt and more fail.
SciFi looks like it's up and coming too, so we'll see what happens.
Okay back to being insane...you know this kinda stuff makes my brain sore
